Chiropractic Care: The Way Forward for Back Pain
Back surgery is a common way to alleviate both chronic and acute back pain, but it may not be the best way. The “gold standard” in conventional medicine for spine pain is a combination of spinal fusion surgery and pain medications. Although this can provide lasting relief for some, it is often a temporary solution which does not address the underlying cause of spine pain. More often than not, spine pain is a result of improper biomechanical functions resulting from habitual movements the body was not designed to endure. These improper movements range from simply sitting too much to a chronic neck down posture while looking at electronic devices (phone, tablet, computer). These habitual improper biomechanical movements have become daily life movements in American culture which relies on cars, technology, and desk jobs that rarely provide appropriate ergonomic body support. With this comes increase in both spine pain as well as shoulder and neck injuries. With biomechanical based pain and opioid drug use at an all time high, it is well overdue to consider an alternative to back pain that does not include surgery and opioid drugs.
Medical literature suggests chiropractic care should be the first line therapy for spine pain before surgery is considered. When surgery has been done but the results are suboptimal, requiring opioid drugs for pain relief, chiropractic care can improve pain and range of movement such as the Chiropractor Shawnee locals trust. Although physical therapy is often prescribed with pain medications after surgical failure, it cannot fully address the root cause of the pain, therefore should be combined with chiropractic care. Without spinal manipulation to align the spine and promote optimal nerve conduction, the highest potential for pain relief is not met. Physical therapy combined with chiropractic care can align the spine as well as retrain and strengthen muscles weakened by improper movements. A correct curvature of the spine not only helps to alleviate pain, but also promotes proper nerve signaling through the entire body. Your digestive system, reproductive organs, and brain function all depend on nerve signals to communicate between systems and organs. Each nerve center is initiated through the spine. Without good spine care, the whole body suffers.
Too many people are in too much pain, requiring too much medication and too many unnecessary surgeries. Chiropractic care is a trusted and proven medical intervention that reduces medical costs. It also is proven to promote the health of all other body systems while also addressing the pain of the area experiencing acute pain. Not many other medical interventions can address the problem at hand while also improving health in other areas of the body. For acute and chronic spine pain, chiropractic care should be the first therapy to consider, not surgery and/or pain medications.
